Where chébé comes from

Chébé is a traditional powder used for generations by Basara women in Chad, renowned for the spectacular length and health of their hair. The powder is made from seeds and plants — including Croton zambesicus — ground and blended according to recipes passed down from mother to daughter.

What's important to understand is that chébé was never intended as a growth product. Traditionally, it's used to protect and maintain hair that's already long. That distinction matters, and it's exactly where the science lines up with the practice.

What chébé actually contains

Chemically speaking, Croton zambesicus is well documented. Research has identified several diterpenoids in the bark and leaves of the plant. A more recent review catalogues dozens of plant compounds in this species, including flavonoids, tannins, and polyphenols known for their antioxidant activity.

In short, chébé is rich in compounds that help protect the hair fiber against oxidative stress and that have a coating, softening effect. These aren't marketing claims — they're documented, identified compound families in the plant.

What needs to be said honestly, though, is that no serious clinical study has measured chébé's effect on beard or hair growth in humans. The chemical richness is documented. The growth effect is not. Anyone telling you otherwise is making it up.

So, does chébé make your beard grow?
